THE DONALD SINCLAIR DALGLEISH HOUSE
This house is a classic example of the Arts and Crafts style of architecture as it appeared in Kamloops in the 1920s and is a real pleasure to look at. The cedar shingle siding, the stepped brick chimney, small piano windows on either side of the chimney, front verandah with short, thick 'pyramid' columns, barge boards, brackets, and subtle moulding details are some of the most typical Craftsman features.
The original owner of this house was Donald Sinclair (Claire) Dalgleish. He worked at N.S. Dalgleish Hardware and Furniture Store in downtown Kamloops. The store was started by Claire's father, N.S. Dalgleish in 1906. Amongst other things, the store was the first home of CFJC radio and Claire was the first radio announcer in circa 1929.
Claire was very active in local sports. He was president of the baseball club and the golf club. He also served as president of the Elks Club. Claire died in 1959 at 61 years of age.
The interior contains pocket French doors between the living room and dining room; the original light fixture in the dining room; the unusual casement windows throughout the house. The kitchen has very nice pantry cupboards. Oak hardwood floors are in the living and dining rooms with fir in the rest of the house. The pedestal sink in the bathroom is from the Banff Springs Hotel.
