SLAVIN HOUSE
This house features an integrated turret, a weathervane, stained glass, and leaded windows. It was built in 1897 by William T. Slavin, and was originally listed as 59 Hill Street until mail deliveries began in the 1920s and houses were numbered west and east of First Avenue.
Slavin came to Kamloops in 1890 from Soda Creek. He soon became a partner in a electric light company, and was manager of the McIntosh and Saucier telephone company. In 1902 he became postmaster and weather recorder at the post office just down the hill from his house, where the Christian Hostel is now located.
Since Slavin was a prominent his home was the scene of many social gatherings that overflowed onto the tennis court east of the house.
Slavin took on the difficult task of city assessor in 1915 and died five years later on May 28, 1920. The Slavin house is considered to be one of the best remaining houses on Seymour Street West.
